Weather

SUMMARY:

Manipulating the weather spikes suspense by blinding a character’s senses, trapping them in danger, and forcing them against a ticking clock. When heavy fog, driving rain, or a blizzard rolls in, it shrinks the character's field of vision and drowns out warning sounds like approaching footsteps, leaving them entirely vulnerable to sudden jump scares.

At the same time, severe weather acts as a natural prison—washing out roads, knocking out power, and cutting off any hope of rescue—which forces characters to stay inside with whatever threat is hunting them. This physical trap is worsened by psychological pressure, where extreme heat waves or freezing temperatures drain their energy and trigger panic, transforming the natural environment into a deadly countdown to survival!

  • Heat causes exhaustion.

  • The environment actively changes the story.

EXERCISE:

Write a story in which the weather plays a role in creating suspense, unease, or urgency. Maybe it amplifies emotions? Maybe someone gets stuck or stranded, or it causes them to hallucinate? Whatever it is, try to make the weather a character in itself within the story!
